First invented by doctor atkins in the sixities, the atkins diet is still widely used today. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it enables fat reduction but still allows you to eat many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, for example bacon and hard cheeses. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet you are encouraged to eat meat and fat, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. Because of this, it is known as a high protein, low carb, weight loss regime. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, amongst them, cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, on the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. The brassica family, Wonderfoods that aid Dieting (includes Cauliflower, Watercress, Tatsoi and Radishes) Known as cruciferous vegetables, these have large amounts of vitamins (eg.vitamin c), minerals (eg. potassium and selenium), isothiocyanates, antioxidents and indole-3-carbinol. Over and above their many other health benefits, the minerals and nutrients in these are thought by many to help reduce the cancer risk in those prone to it.. |
