Weight loss systemsThe Atkins’ Diet Although it originated back in the 1960s, the atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systems over the last few years. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it enables weight reduction whilst allowing many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, such as lamb and eggs. On the atkins diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that are on the banned list. It is often referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, diet. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. With this diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The 'science' behind the atkins diet is that if we cut down on carbs, we will burn up our stored fat and we will lose weight The South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a diet started by Dr. arthur agatston which emphasizes that dieters should eat "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbohydrates" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Agatston invented his weight loss system for people who have heart disease, based on his analysis of scientific data completed on other weight loss systems. "good" foods include, broiled ham, turkey bacon, seafood, mozzarella cheese, pecan halves, lowfat or nonfat milk and certain vegetables, such as black beans, cucumbers and sprouts. The Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition and weight loss system primarily detailed by Barry Sears in a series of books, publications and an accompanying website. The Zone diet isn’t particularly a fat reduction diet, however many people believe that they really manage to lose a few pounds by following it. The main scientific theory behind the Zone Diet is that if you manage to limit the amount of insulin and glucogen (two hormones produced naturally by your body), then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which puts one's body in a state of equilibrium which is an awful lot more healthful than usual, which followers of the diet, refer to as '"he zone". Sears alleges that when your body is in this 'zone' it is much more efficient and, as a result, doesn't build up fat. The key process of the zone diet is to keep tight control over the precise ratio of carbs to proteins, and to ensure you get increased levels of Omega 3 and omega 6. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi (or glycaemic index) nutrition and weightloss system is based on the gi index, a list of foods and a score representing the ease with which the carbohydrates of the food type gets changed to sugar in your body. The believe is that slow acting foods (ie with a low Gi number), suppress your appetite and mean that you can cut down on food without feeling you are missing out. It's also very useful for diabetes sufferers, as the low GI types of food are useful in preventing surges in glucose secretion. |
