The Atkins’ Diet
Now nearly 5 decades old, the famous atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last few years. Although not accepted by all scientists, it claims to allow weight reduction but still allows you to eat many foods that would not be part of a normal diet, such as beef and egg and cheese. With the atkins diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. Because of this, it is known as a low carbohydrate/high protein, weight loss regime. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The controversial theory behind the popular atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbs to burn into glucose, it is the carbohydrates which are burned first. If we eat fewer carbohydrates, our bodies will burn up the fat we have stored and we will diet successfully. This theory is contentious, not all nutritionalists accept this as true and many allege that it is sometimes unsafe. Foods containing allyl sulfides ( includes eschalot, onions and welsh onion) The onion, leek and garlic family of vegetables is rich in allyl sulphides, a chemical which experts believe could be linked to a reduced risk of stomach and colon cancer. Although there is as yet, not enough scientific evidence at hand, allyl sulfides are also thought by many experts to reduce problems with antiinflammatory effect, high blood pressure and diabetes. Foods containing allyl sulfides are low in calories, so make sure you add them to your weight loss regime. |
