Weight loss systemsThe Zone Diet The Zone diet is a nutrition and weightloss system initially created by Barry Sears in a number of books. The Zone diet is not expressly a weight loss diet, although many 'zone dieters' claim that they actually lose a few pounds by following the zone diet. The supposed science behind the Zone Diet is that if one can control the levels of insulin and glucogen (two hormones), then your body releases eicosanoids (anti-inflamatory chemicals) which, as a result puts one's body in a state of equilibrium which is far more healthy than normal, which followers of the diet, refer to as '"he zone". Sears believes that if you get into this 'zone', your metabolism is working at its best and, as a result, does not build up layers of fat. The main procedure of the diet is to control the ratio of carbs to proteins, and to dose yourself with large amounts of Omega 3 fish oils. The Glycaemic Index Diet The glycaemic index nutrition and weightloss system is based on the gi (or glycaemic index), a chart showing foods and a score representing the speed with which the carbohydrates in the food type gets converted to sugar in the dieters bloodstream. The theory is that slow release types of food (ie those food types with a low Glycaemic score), keep you satisfied for a longer period of time and help to eat less food without feeling hungry. It's also very useful for folk with diabetes, as the low GI food types are beneficial in controlling increases in glucose secretion. The Atkins’ Diet Developed by dr. robert atkins in the 1960s, the atkins diet is still widely used today. Having many well known film stars amongst its supporters, it enables fat reduction but still allows you to eat many of the foods you love, eg pork and cheeses. On the atkins diet it is considered good to eat fat and protein, it is the carbs that are on the banned list. It is referred to as a low carbohydrate/high protein, nutrition and weight loss system. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and, as a result, poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and, as a consequence, olive oil. The South Beach Diet The South Beach diet is a diet system invented by Dr. arthur agatston which emphasizes that dieters should eat "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbs" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats" Doctor agatston developed his weight loss regime for people who have cardiac problems, as a result of his detailed analysis of scientific studies on other weight loss systems. "good" foods include, lean cuts of beef, skinless poultry, shrimp, cottage cheese, peanut butter, lowfat or nonfat milk and certain vegetables, such as black beans, collard greens and turnips. |
