Ingredients
1 tart apple, unpeeled, diced
1 medium banana, peeled, sliced
2 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup red or green grapes
1 small orange, peeled, sectioned
1 tbsp minced crystallized ginger
2 tsp minced fresh mint
Directions
Combine the apple and banana in a bowl and sprinkle with lemon juice. Add
the remaining ingredients and toss well.
Cover refrigerate for 1 hour prior to serving.
This recipe yields 6 servings. Serving size: 1/2 cup.

The Atkins’ Diet
Developed by dr. robert atkins in the 1960s, the atkins diet has been one of the most popular weight loss systms over the last few years. Although not accepted by all scientists, it supposedly allows fat reduction whilst allowing you to eat many of the foods you love, eg meat and some dairy produce. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet you eat protein and fat, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. It is referred to as a high protein, low carb, weight loss regime. With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including, but not limited to, cereals and pasta made from white flour. Unlike other diets, with the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat continues to be nutrient-rich unprocessed foods such as meat, fish and poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter & olive oil. The Atkins’ Diet Theory The logic of the popular atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbs to convert into carbs, it is the carbohydrates which are burned initially. If we injest less carbs, our bodies will consume our stored fat and we will achieve weight loss. This theory is contentious, not all experts concur and a good number of think it can sometimes be hazardous. The Glycaemic Index Diet The gi (or glycaemic index) diet system is based on the gi (or glycaemic index), a list of food types and a score illustrating the speed with which the glucose in the food gets converted to sugar in your system. The believe is that slow release foods (ie those foods with a low Gi score), suppress your appetite and help you to consume less food without feeling you are missing out. It is also extremely useful for people with diabetes, as the low GI food types are helpful in preventing surges in glucose amount. Superfoods containing carotenes (includes cilantro, turnip greens and winter squash) These colorful fruits and vegetables contain alpha-carotene and beta-carotene believed by scientists to help in minimizing the risk of cancer, spefically cancer of the stomach and lesophagus. The majority of these are low in calories, so should be a part of every diet system. |
